FINANZAS CLARAS / LONG-TERM INVESTING

Understand first.
Invest with understanding.

A concept guide to ETFs, the S&P 500 and long-term investing. Explore the basics to understand products and their risks.

THE VEHICLE / PRODUCT

ETF

A fund whose shares trade on an exchange. Some ETFs aim to track the S&P 500.

THE BENCHMARK / INDEX

S&P 500

An index of large US companies used as a benchmark for certain products.

How they relate: an ETF can track an index. The index is not the fund, and not all ETFs track the S&P 500.

01 / ETF: the investment vehicle

An ETF is a fund whose shares trade on an exchange. Many track an index; others use different strategies. Their risks depend on their assets and strategy.

Example: an ETF tracking the S&P 500 aims to replicate its performance. The ETF is the product and the index is the benchmark.

02 / S&P 500: a market benchmark

It is an index of large US companies, weighted by market capitalisation adjusted for shares available for trading. Its constituents do not all have equal weights.

Tracking this index is not the same as investing in the entire global market: its exposure focuses on large US companies.

03 / Long term: consider your horizon

Your investment horizon is how long you expect to hold an investment. Equities can fall significantly; holding them for many years does not guarantee gains.

Key question: when would you need access to the money? Your timeframe should be considered alongside liquidity needs and risk.

04 / Diversification, costs and risks

Diversification spreads exposure across assets but does not eliminate losses. Several ETFs may hold the same companies. It is also important to understand fees, currency exposure and trading costs.

Review objectives, assets, risks and costs in the product documentation. Past performance does not guarantee future results.

A concept sample of educational content. It includes no personalised purchase recommendations or promises of returns. Investing involves a risk of loss.
